"O"vertones - The Monthly Davey O. Newsletter - September 2013
Hello again!!!! Has it already been a month since the last Newsletter? Labor Day is now behind us, some Fall like temperatures are in the air here in Buffalo, and I am already beginning to see small gatherings of fallen leaves on the ground. I must admit, as much as I enjoy Summer in its all-too-brief visitation each year, Autumn is indeed my favorite time of year. I love the chill of the morning, the changing colors, the occasional grey and overcast day…. And football (GO PACK GO!!!)
It’s also a time of year when I tend to tour more frequently, especially in the New England States which get increasingly beautiful and scenic by early to mid October. It also pleasantly reminds me that one of my favorite events of the year, the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference (NERFA) is waiting just around the corner in early November. Another beautiful drive down to Kerhonkson, NY and the Hudson Valley Resort for 4 days (and sometimes all night) of showcases, workshops, song circles, and mentoring sessions in the surroundings of what is a wonderful like-minded community of Folk and Roots Musicians, DJ’s, luthiers, venue presenters, managers, booking agents and fans of Folk Music.
A community I am proud to be a member of, and one that encompasses many people that I count among my friends within this business. Other than the occasional times when we might be on the same show together, this is usually the only time of year we are all gathered under the same roof. So we tend to make the most of it, hence the late nights attending showcases, trading songs on the sofas of the hotel lobby, or just sitting quietly in a secluded spot catching up on our lives both in and out of music. All for the love of sharing this thing we call Folk Music……
For the record…….
On this very morning, as I write this newsletter, I am mentally preparing myself for the first “official” recording session that will take place this evening with Jeffrey Mikulski for my next CD, tentatively titled “From A Roadside Stand”. For me, recording is somewhat like painting rooms in a house – you put it off, but once you actually start the process, the color starts going on the walls and you begin seeing the results, it becomes a very satisfying and enjoyable thing to see through to completion. It truly is a seed which as an artist, you can watch “come into being”. The plan is to have the CD available in March 2014 and hopefully Jeffrey and I will have some early versions we can share with you by late Fall.
A September to remember…….
I am only two days away from beginning what I refer to as my “touring season”. For many of the aforementioned reasons (and to the chagrin of my puzzled friends/family – “why don’t you travel in the Summer when the weather is nicer?”), I do love to tour during the Autumn, as evidenced by this 2011 blog on my website –
Not intended as wishing the Summer away, I have been looking forward to these dates, to the opportunity to play shows with artists I respect and can learn a great deal from, to making my first “musical” visits to Rhode Island and Virginia, to seeing family, friends, making new friends and most importantly to have the opportunity to share my stories and songs with all of you. As I sing in “The Song I Wrote” - one of the songs to appear on the next CD -
“I will grab my keys
Pull on my over coat
Put on my best blue jeans
And sing you the song I wrote
I’ll get behind the wheel
And drive every mile with hope
To tell you how my heart feels
In the words of a song I wrote”
Looking forward to my travels to your town, driving every mile with hope….. Be well, carry love and kindness in your heart and smile often – Davey O. (NOTE!!! – Always check with the venue before heading out – sometimes life brings us flat tires, bad weather, and a host of other things that are beyond our control that cause shows to not go as originally planned!!!)
